Illuminating York - 30th October to 2nd November 2013

Attracting over 27,000 visitors throughout the annual four day festival QED was proud to sponsor Illuminating York for the fourth consecutive year. This year's highlights were Ross Ashton's Triquetra at Clifford's Tower and Immersive and Gaianova's Storyteller at the Museum Gardens. Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council's tourism portfolio holder, said: "There has been a fantastic response to the artistic works and we feel that all in all it has been a great success."

"Triquetra" by Ross Ashton
This stunning new piece of work projected onto the iconic Clifford's Tower with sound by Karen Monid tells the tale of the three Viking kings of Denmark who had a great influence on York and England, in particular Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Cnut the Great. Spanning an area of approximately 55m x 13.5m QED used eight Christie HD18K 20,000 lumen HD projectors to illuminate the tower and the grass mound upon which it stands.

Extreme high brightness was required not only to combat the difficulty of projecting onto grass but also to overcome the high ambient light levels present at 6.00pm when the festival opened each day. Being able to quickly and accurately double-up projectors with the in-built Christie Twist software meant that there was full live back-up as well as extra brightness. QED's Head of Digital Media, Richard Porter and Senior AV technician Dan Gray set-up and ran the installation throughout the four day festival utilising three d3 media servers and QED's DVI/Ethernet fibre optic distribution system.

QED Director, Paul Wigfield, commented "The projection was absolutely stunning and demonstrates what can be achieved with great creative vision and pure projection power - the clarity and brightness of the projection onto the grass was quite remarkable and truly transformed this iconic site."

"The Storyteller"
Immersive and Gaianova teamed up to create a unique projection experience combining film and animation, telling the story of Viking king Eric Bloodaxe, with humorous narrative and unforgettable effects. QED provided six Christie S+20K projectors installed into three projection towers and fed by Immersive's Ai media servers.
